Kortedagsteeg
Inward expansion + homes + commercial units
2.398 m² | (residential: 1.041 m² | retail units: 1.357 m²)
Ghent, Kortedagsteeg
Nine homes, four commercial units and an inner garden were created by renovating a historic building and integrating an existing chapel, the Wolweverskapel.
The historic facade was extended by adding a contemporary style gallery that forms a subtle contrast. The gallery also forms the link between the commercial units on the street front and the entrance and homes on the garden side.
This acts as a pivotal point that leads to an upper-level concourse with galleries connecting each home. The homes on the Kortedagsteeg, as well as those facing the garden, are oriented around this sheltered and landscaped inner concourse. One home is fully detached and is located entirely within this landscaped area. The 14th-century chapel, the Wolweverskapel, lends the whole a theatrical backdrop and is an added bonus to living in such a pleasant landscaped urban setting.
