The Guldendal site is located a stone’s throw away from downtown Mechelen and offers space for 42 open-plan apartments and 31 single-family homes. The project site features a healthy mix of 2 and 3 bedroom apartments. These have been subdivided into two blocks facing each other and which are connected by an underground car park for 60 cars.

Project Description

The two buildings enclose a private courtyard which is divided into private gardens for the apartments on one side, and a communal garden on the other. Pathways through the communal gardens take residents and visitors to the apartments. Behind the apartments an open urban green space offers residents possibilities for recreational activities.

The façades of the apartments are built in reddish brown brick. The extended terrace screens create an architectural unity and offer privacy to the residents. The third, recessed storey is finished in white roughcast.

The alternating widths of the dwellings’ façades at ground level, either 6 or 8 metres, contribute to the unique design language of the façade. The 8-metre wide homes accommodate a garage. The façades are finished in two different brick tones and white roughcast. Each house has a private garden which is accessed via a private path at the rear.
