In the centre of Lokeren, the existing buildings are being replaced by the construction of four multi-family residences comprising 38 housing units and an underground parking garage.

Project Description

The design creates a cohesive new whole that integrates seamlessly with its surroundings.
The ground floor, with its concrete canopy and columns, forms a pedestal for the building volumes above. These upper volumes share a uniform architectural expression and scale, appearing as one continuous composition with their base.
The volumes are clustered around an open inner courtyard with green gardens and pathways in permeable materials, which ensures optimal orientation and varied views for all residential units.
The restrained building volumes gain a dynamic quality through recessed and projecting terraces, canopies, and galleries — a play that continues skyward with carefully positioned dormer windows.

The building is conceived as three functional horizontal layers:
The base, at ground level, accommodates not only housing but also several communal and public functions, such as covered outdoor areas, bicycle storage, access to the underground parking garage, and entrances to the lifts and stairwells.
Above the base are the residential units.
Beneath the buildings and landscaped areas lies a parking garage extending across the full depth of the site.

The façades are finished in subtly varied grey brickwork with concrete elements and terraces. Exterior joinery is executed in black aluminium with clear glazing. Balustrades are designed either with white vertical slats or clear glass panels.

The pitched roofs are clad in anthracite roof tiles with integrated gutters. The sides of recessed terraces and projecting dormer windows are finished in white and black aluminium cladding respectively.
