daskalides

Ghent

Concept

This residential development project consists of 101 apartments with underground parking situated on the site of the old Daskalides factory in Ghent.

The rural structure of this suburban area had to remain clearly visible. The City of Ghent was also striving to provide a sufficiently large, varied and high-quality supply of homes as an annex and enhancement to the surrounding landscaped areas with the aim of stimulating cycling and walking.

The site accommodates an apartment block and a town park. The building measures 101 m along its front facade on the Henri Dunantlaan and has a maximum depth of 38.3 m. The area planning framework establishes a maximum cornice height of 21.95 m set back at 50° from the facade cornice height of 15.79 m.

The aim was to create a variety of apartments overlooking the park between the Henri Dunantlaan and Watersportlaan. All living areas are situated along the outward-facing walls and night-time areas are situated around patios ensuring the required level of vigilance around entranceways. The patios are landscaped with standard trees ensuring privacy between apartments.

The landscaped theme surrounding the building is continued on the building's green roofs. The architecture establishes a variety of visible roof sections whereby green roofs provide an additional landscaped surface. Hedges serve as screens between roof terraces.

Two cycle paths cross the park connecting the Henri Dunantlaan with Einde Were. The park is only partially open to the public.
